New art - inspired by the Museum's Ancient Egyptian collection

View of Project 2006

This colourful exhibition shows a wide range of approaches to the simplicity and elegance of design used by the ancient Egyptians. The art includes sculpture, prints and paintings, some serious, some humorous, some thought provoking. The works are inspired by the collection of Ancient Egptian artefacts at the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester.

Described by the arts critic Leslie Goodwin in the Leicester Mercury as 'the best project of the Society so far', the whole show comprises 75 works by 31 artists. The materials and media in the exhibition include works on papyrus, work which explores the use of the main five colours used by the ancient Egyptians, collage, oil, acrylics, watercolour and inks. There are 3D works in mixed metals and media, a scorched limewood carving and copper death mask.
