Carl Swanson is an Academician of the Royal West of England Academy, a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a Professional Member of the Blacksmiths Association. He is a regular exhibitor at the Annual Autumn RWA Exhibitions and also shows at the Royal Academy.

He studied woodwork, ceramics and sculpture at Leicester College of Art and later went on to further study in ceramics at Loughborough College of Art. Henry Moore and Elizabeth Frink were key influences on his work at the beginning of his career. Carl Swanson taught sculpture, blacksmithing and ceramics at Leicester College of Art since the 1970's and also taught at William Bradford College.In 1995 his work was included in a group show at the Pyramid Gallery in New York. His work is included in numerous private collections and in the Leicester University Art Collection.
