Joy Norman is a mixed-media artist producing framed work, assemblages and vessels.

"I have developed my own style of papermaking over many years. I create paper pulp from waste-paper or cotton linters and also work with other handmade papers. I employ many techniques to achieve the desired result, including impressing, inlay, casting, painting and stitching.  I aim to create delicate and intriguing decorative pieces, combining the diverse qualities of pulps and papers with textile fragments, organic items and found objects,

A deep fascination with fossils and relics is apparent in much of my work. I distress and manipulate many of my creations until they appear reminiscent of archaeological finds or ancient treasures. I am also inspired by myths and legends and enjoy creating fantasy creatures, fish and other marine life, with scales, spines and trailing tendrils."

Current work -  I am  continuing to explore the world of, 'Miss Clara Knight's Curious Collections'.  Clara is a Victorian girl possessed of a particularly independent nature, who has spent many years travelling the country with her father, an eminent Professor of Archaeology. As they search for wonders of antiquity, Clara compiles treasured collections of her own.  As well as creating framed work, assemblages and work in glass domes I have so far written two parts of Clara's story-journal:

Miss Clara Knight's Curious Collections, Series One: Seashore Specimens.

This first series sees Clara and her father staying with relatives at the coast and taking the opportunity to search for objects of fascination along the shoreline. 'The sea here is a vast and breath-taking sight to behold as it is buffeted by the bracing sea breeze....'

Miss Clara Knight's Curious Collections, Series Two: A New Discovery.

This series sees Clara travel North where her father is setting up an archaeological dig in search of a mysterious hoard. 'He has been studying his maps and ancient history books for many weeks now and is extremely eager to arrive at our destination...'

Joy Norman is also a Member of the Northants & Rutland Open Studios and the VISUALise Textile group, and the Lutterworth Stitchers Group.
