Maria Collingham’s visceral paintings exist on the cusp of figuration and abstraction; they explore the human condition as well as the fleetingly beautiful.
She has exhibited widely, including at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, and has had a number of solo exhibitions, most recently at Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester. Her paintings and drawings reside in public and private collections in the UK, USA, France and Norway.
Maria was amongst the first few people, worldwide, to complete a practice based PhD in Fine Art (2001, De Montfort University). During her doctoral research she produced art works inspired by Sigmund Freud’s writing on ‘The Uncanny’ and was mentored by the highly acclaimed artist Bridget Riley.
Maria Collingham has lectured in fine art practice for over 20 years at a number of academic institutions including De Montfort University, University of Leicester and Nottingham Trent University. She has delivered arts projects and workshops for a number of organisations, including English Heritage and the BBC.
