Let's Draw - De Montfort University Campus

All are very welcome to join the Urban Sketchers Leicester - unofficial group - sketching in the De Montfort University campus where there are wonderful and varied buildings on Mill Lane on Saturday 3 November from 11am - 3.30pm

11am - Meet at the Riverside Cafe, bottom of Mill Lane, right next to the River Soar. You will then have a couple of hours to explore and sketch the urban environment, including the Vijay Patel building (2016), the Queens building (1993), the Kimberlin library, and views down to the River Soar.

1pm - meet back at the start point -  outside Riverside Café.  View work and take a group photo (if wet the group will decide where to meet up). Have lunch/ coffee in the local vicinity for those that would like to - a chance to chat, share tips & look at sketchbooks.

After lunch - in stark contrast, you can head just around the corner to the Grade II listed Chancellor's House (Georgian townhouse, 1772), the Hawthorn building (1890), and the Grade II listed Trinity House (1331- former almshouses founded by the Dukes of Lancaster). At both sites there are many sketching options to cater for every taste.

3.30pm - Meet back outside the Hawthorne building  -  have a look at the afternoon's work (again if it's wet this location may change)

What to bring

Bring your own drawing materials, stool, warm clothes and provisions etc. It is a chance to meet fellow sketchers, chat, share tips - beginners/ experienced all welcome.

How to get there

The site is approximately 1 mile from Leicester train station. Parking is limited in the area but the site is easily accessed from the city centre.  More information and links on the urban sketchers Facebook page (see link below)

Where to have lunch

Several options for lunch........ including The Bowling Green pub on Oxford Street, visible from the top of Mill Lane), or back to the Riverside Cafe, plus there is also a local Tesco Express for sandwiches etc.

Other options for drawing on the day

November can be a fickle month weather-wise there are arrangements in place to cater for this. Several of the buildings have extensive overhangs which will still allow for sheltered outdoor sketching with views across campus (DMU Student Union, outside the Food Hall and various other locations). There's also inside the Riverside Cafe (with a nice hot Coffee & views outside), and the Newarke Houses Museum have again granted Urban Sketchers access and are happy for sketchers to go inside to draw there too.
