Andrew Wynne

Andrew Wynne is an artist and educator working in batik, mosaic and mixed media. 

Andrew was introduced to the centuries-old, often time-consuming and technically demanding batik process in 1989 as part of a print-and-dye course. His foundational work is painterly, focusing on architecture, landscapes, flora, and fauna. Now, influenced by research into the diverse history and culture of batik as a traditional textile craft, his work has become experimental and evolved from representational to spontaneous, abstract imagery, often combining other mediums such as monoprints and collage.  Andrew explains . . .

"For me, the unique interaction of the wax resist, discharge medium, and dye on the fabric and paper and all the 'chance elements' that happen along the way inspire me to constantly explore its potential as an expressive art medium. My recent works have been an exercise in risk-taking, deliberately bypassing the thought processes with those of feeling, often incorporating other mediums.

I also design and create mosaics and I often find that this slower, more methodical, and tactile work style allows me to quieten and process my thoughts.

There's something about the creative process that intrigues me ....
the act of surrender to an idea, a phrase, lyrics from a song, a feeling evoked from a passing conversation as a starting point to the work taking on a life of it's own, seeking expression through me."

Works have been created in schools and community settings, including projects with English Nature and the National Trust. Many are in private collections worldwide, including the UK, USA, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Poland.

His work ' Energy Flows', was selected for the 'Patterns of Change' exhibition at the Naples Botanical Gardens in Florida, USA, in May/June 2024. An exhibition showing the diverse interpretations of the theme of climate change.  This work aims to present a positive view to the issues that we're faced with, such as innovative technological advances and changes in awareness.

Andrew is an active member of the Northamptonshire and Rutland Open Studios and the Batik Guild, which has international membership. He is Area Representative for the Midlands and East Anglia.
