Ashley’s paintings, though primarily portraits and figurative works, are not focused on capturing a beautiful likeness of a person. Instead, they represent an ongoing exploration of the painting process itself—how the artwork takes shape through structure, composition, colour, and mark-making. Accidents and mishaps are integral to his approach, with layers often being built up and scraped away, leaving a palette reduced to tonal impressions. This playful investigation into the qualities of paint and the act of mark-making infuses his work with energy and vibrancy, giving each piece a sense of constant movement and life.
